THE YOUNG GENERATION AT OLAJTERV TERVEZŐ
2023. July 31.
In our previous article, we talked to two senior engineer colleagues of Olajterv Tervező Ltd., who together have been strengthening the company for more than 60 years. Now we continue the series with two young professionals, Bence Németh and Balázs Kuzma, who tell us about their experiences so far.
How long have you been working for Olajterv? What positions do you have? Why did you join the company?
Bence Németh: This is my first job. I started as an intern during my university years in the Department, then in 2019, after graduating from the Faculty of Chemical Engineering of the Budapest University of Technology and Economics, I continued my career in a full-time position as a technology designer. My father is an architect, and I saw his example and how good it feels to create something lasting so this led me in the direction of design.
Balázs Kuzma: I started one year ago, in 2022, in the Engineering Department at Olajterv as a technical draftsman. I am a building services technician with more than 10 years of hands-on experience from my previous workplaces. I applied to Olajterv Tervező with the intention to expand my mechanical knowledge and to get to know the oil industry. Now, unlike at my previous employers, I sit on the other side, at the design table, which is a completely new experience.
What are your duties? What projects are you working on? What is it like to be a young professional at Olajterv?
BN: I do the process design of facilities, plants. In the case of smaller projects, I carry out the process design alone. In case of bigger projects, we develop the plans together with a professional team. It is really empowering that even as a young engineer I was given my own project, and was fully trusted with task. Such assignment was for example the replacement of the reactors of the REF-4 (gasoline reforming) plant in the Danube Refinery. For larger projects, such as the OCU plant (Olefin Conversion Unit, or propylene plant) in Tiszaújváros, the lead designer helps a lot. As I experienced collective knowledge works very well in the company; when there is a problem or question, we discuss it with the colleagues and find a solution together. It is really reassuring that there is always someone to turn to. In addition, there are regular trainings in our department to share useful tips and tricks of the software we use, which helps in our day-to-day work.
BK: I work on most of the projects in our department and help with modelling, so my tasks are very varied. My situation is somewhat special in the company, since I joined the team as a technician without a university degree, this is not typical. Despite this fact I never felt less. The attitude of my colleagues is very positive, inclusive and helpful. I receive a lot of support for my work and I try to seize every opportunity for development. In the past year, I have acquired a lot of new knowledge and I am constantly learning during my work.
Is there a project or task that you are particularly proud of or memorable to you?
BN: It is a great experience to see the OCU plant being built and coming to life, which we created together with my colleagues at the design table. Also, it is always very useful to be on-site, especially if the planning task is related to an existing plant. Talking to colleagues who have been working with the given technology for a long time usually provides us a lot of practical information for the design.
BK: A defining experience of mine is related to the MOL Danube Refinery DCU plant. This year I got the task to do the 3D building survey or 3D scanning of two damaged coke tanks using special laser scanning devices. I have always been interested in LIDAR-based laser scanners, but I never thought that I would have the opportunity to work with such serious devices. I did not only work on the on-site data collection, but also in the post-processing phase which I particularly enjoyed.
What are your plans for the future?
BN: I clearly envision my future here at Olajterv Tervező. I have the chance to work on a diverse range of projects ensuring varied tasks. Besides, I learn a lot from my colleagues and my tasks every day. The high degree of independence and the professional, yet friendly relationship with colleagues are also motivating.
BK: I really like my job and I plan to stay at Olajterv as long as possible. I believe in the future I will have more serious design tasks with more responsibility, which I find motivating. Also, in case the company also supports it, I would like to continue my education in the future.
Do you have any defining personal experiences or memories?
BN: When I started my internship at the company, I was thrown into the deep end on my first days. I got the task to understand the technology of the AV-3 plant (atmospheric and vacuum distillation plant 3 of the Danube Refinery) so I could participate in the process design tasks afterwards. I found this rather challenging and there was a moment when I wondered if I was at the right place. It turned out I was and I managed to deliver the task and prove myself. Besides, the relationship with my colleagues has been excellent from the start, the working days are spent in a good atmosphere and I am very happy to come to work.
BK: I already have a lot of previous work experience, but I have never had the opportunity to work in such a calm, stress-free atmosphere and as a member of an inclusive and helpful team. This is such a liberating feeling.
We thank Bence and Balázs for their work so far and we hope they will continue to strengthen the Olajterv Tervező for a long time to come!
